What is AI Art? Where Do I Start And How?

So you want to get into AI Art? Here is where to start

Having Trouble? Join my small discord for some help:

Hello there my name is Elle and I run the OneStrokeBrush Account and I am writing this blogpost up to basically help with people wanting to create with AI. Right now AI Art is kinda complex and daunting at times but if you are passionate you will pick it up fast

What is AI art?

AI art is when someone writes a prompt such as "green dog" then the AI spits out an image using language AI to interpret the words and visual AI then creates and image from that interpretation. It has a brain and there are multiple brains out there. The one more recently used is called Clip+Vqgan which although I have limited understanding of its methods I can tell you it is great at being artistic.

This is a simple summary to hopefully help out

There are a few methods of running these AIs:

Online Via Google Colaboratory or Snowpixel.
(Other Services are also available)
Easy to setup or no setup
Needs a browser and an internet connection, Google sign up.

Locally via Python (coding software):
Hard to setup without prior knowledge
You will normally have a painful time running without a non-windows operating system
Needs and RTX 20 or 30 series card from Nvidia
Minimum 8Gb VRAM
Good CPU

Using a software such as Visions of Chaos Windows Ten:
Hard to setup but has instructions
Can be difficult to get working if you are not literate with computers
Needs and RTX 20 or 30 series card from Nvidia
Minimum 8Gb VRAM
Good CPU
A Great Setup Video Can be Found Here by Nerdy Rodent.
Follow the Pip Install Step Exactly

Before I Talk Websites:

First of all to prelude the options I will warn that there are some issues with how long the AI can take, how much energy is used in image creation and how certain images created can be undesirable.

Number 1:

The AIs I have here are dependent on a few things, your ability to deal with Google Colab and patience with certain code. I am not very code smart but I understand it enough to be comfortable.

Google Colab lets you run the program using a google server, you can use a phone, laptop or PC and it won't matter. However it can be a bit difficult to get used to. If you get stuck on something I can be contacted via my Instagram and Twitter accounts to help out by the same name as this blog.

Number 2:

There are questions around energy usage when it comes to this AI usage
It uses a similar amount to games or other GPU tasks
Unlike Crypto or NFTs there is no industrial mass scale and it is unlikely to become one
More efficiency for these algorithms means better quality, faster times and less energy usage. This also is an exercise in being artistic and as such has a positive, non-profit driven outcome

The Main issue with these types of algorithms is the time of running your GPU or a cloud GPU does add energy load but it is only a problem when it hits a mass market, this can become that but due to complexity and barriers to entry it is, in my opinion, unlikely to hit the massed appeal that occurred with Crypto.

Number 3:

I implore any AI creators to remember their exterior, there is a big issue with the AI it reflects cultural norms, it can be influenced to provide an outcome positive or negative with a prompt and sometimes images can be frightening or disturbing. Please understand that this means any creations are an extension of the prompt writer and the dataset creator.

Be careful and please be positive. Horror can be interesting, I have created ghosts, aliens and monsters but its important that you don't go too far, the AI creates but you have the power to post.

Websites Free and Not free, Difficult and Easy:

All of these websites use prompts, a prompt is a sentence that you would like the AI to create.
"A green gold dog" is an example of a simple prompt "Green Dog 4k Raytraced" Genuinely can provide better results.

For ideas of what prompts can do

So this app is the not free way. Its a really easy, friendly way to get into AI art. You don't get a video but you do get three results for one prompt making it easier for you to learn prompt writing. You basically pay ten dollars for 30 images which is great value
Recommend especially if you don't have great computer skills

I Really love this Colab, can look a bit intimidating but look for the ARGs section.
Here you can change the prompt:
 prompts=["BLAH BLAH BLAH"],

This gives lovely results but you need to do some prompt engineering,
there is a max prompt size so that may stop it from running anything above 77 characters:

Here is where you change the prompt make sure its in the quotations!

After putting your prompt in click here:

Then this should come up Press Run All:

Then that should hopefully run until you stop it here hit that circle with a square:

So Bam Hopefully this is helpful, this is just a little initial tutorial I hope to do something more in depth in future!

Thank You For Reading
